Though you couldn’t tell that her eyes were the prettiest baby blue like her father's. But the young man looking at the face staring back at him knew how blue the eyes were staring back at him. He wanted nothing more than to be home to see her grow up, but he had to make enough money to support them on the small farm he was left my his father-in-law after his death and the death of his wife trying to bring their daughter into the world. He could see his wife Martha in his mind holding their new born daughter just before she died. Being lost in his memories of her laughter and the feel of her hugs as he tucked her into bed at night. He didn’t hear the door of the bunkhouse open and Jimmy call his name. Until the tintype was snatched from his hand. “Hey give that back Jimmy.” He reached for the small frame to take it back form his friend. “No. Who do we have here?” Hickok said as he turned the tintype around to see a little girl staring back at him. Jimmy looked up from the tintype to his friends eyes. “Cute Kid, Who is she Cody?” Standing up Cody took the tintype back wrapping it in a soft piece of deerskin. “Her name's Laurall.” Turning the wrapped frame back into his trunk. Watching the blond rider Jimmy found it hard to believe Cody had something he was keeping from all of them. “Boy when the others find out.” Spinning on the other man Cody glared “Don’t you say anything to them. I don’t want anyone to know yet.” Watching a grin move across his friend’s hardened face. “Come on Jimmy don’t say anything not yet.” “I won’t if you tell me who she is and why you have her picture.” Jimmy grinned crossing his arms over his chest waiting to see if he was going to get answer. Slamming the lid to his trunk Cody spun to face his friends. “She’s 2. She’s my daughter.” Moving very close to the gunfighter he hissed pointing a finger into the other mans chest. “I swear you tell anyone Jimmy I will kill you. I will not have her in any danger.” Holing up both hands in surrender smiling at his normally boisterous friends murderous look Jimmy nodded “I won’t tell anyone I promise. Just take it easy Cody. She is a cute kid.” Backing up Cody smiled. “Thanks I’ll have her with me soon as I have enough money to hire help for my place and send for her. You can’t tell anyone Jimmy not yet.” Hickok smiled. “I promise, we all have our secrets that are our own till the time is right to tell them.” Seeing the surprised look in his friends eyes the gunfighter smiled. “I know spending to much time around Kid and Lou.” The two friends recovered quickly as the others joined them inside the bunkhouse to help with lunch.
